Install the migrator
Add the Documentation.AI migrator to Claude Code or Codex, then start a migration by describing it to your AI assistant.
The migrator is an open-source plugin for AI assistants. You install it once, and then start a migration by describing it to your assistant in plain words.
Before you begin
- Install Node.js 22 or newer.
- Install Claude Code or Codex.
- If you plan to migrate with Git, install Git and make sure you can push to your project's repository.
- Chrome or Chromium is optional. The migrator uses it to check pages at phone and tablet sizes and to save the report as a PDF.
How to install the migrator
In Claude Code, run these two commands:
/plugin marketplace add documentation-ai/documentation-ai-migration-skills
/plugin install documentation-ai-migration@documentation-ai-migration
Start a new session to load the plugin. It works in Claude Code in the terminal, in the VS Code extension, and in the Code tab of the Claude desktop app.
In the Claude Code extension, type /plugins in the prompt box to open Manage plugins. On the Marketplaces tab, add documentation-ai/documentation-ai-migration-skills. Then on the Plugins tab, find documentation-ai-migration and click Install.
The same /plugin commands as the terminal work here too. If you already installed the plugin in Claude Code in a terminal, it is available in VS Code without installing it again.
In a terminal, run:
codex plugin marketplace add documentation-ai/documentation-ai-migration-skills
codex plugin add documentation-ai-migration@documentation-ai-migration
Codex runs commands in a sandbox that blocks network access. A migration needs the network and a folder to work in, so start Codex like this:
mkdir -p ~/migrations
codex --sandbox workspace-write -c sandbox_workspace_write.network_access=true --add-dir ~/migrations
How to start a migration
Open your assistant and describe the migration:
Migrate https://docs.acme.com to Documentation.AI
To start a skill directly, use the one for your platform: migrate-mintlify-to-documentation-ai, migrate-gitbook-to-documentation-ai, migrate-readme-to-documentation-ai, migrate-document360-to-documentation-ai, or migrate-generic-to-documentation-ai for any other site.
- In Claude Code, type it with the plugin's name in front, such as
/documentation-ai-migration:migrate-gitbook-to-documentation-ai. - In Codex, mention it by name, such as
Use $migrate-gitbook-to-documentation-ai to migrate https://docs.acme.com to Documentation.AI.
Your assistant asks for anything it still needs, such as how to deliver the result. Then it follows the steps in Migrate to Documentation.AI.
Each migration keeps its files in its own folder, such as ~/migrations/acme-docs. The report is saved there too.
How to update the migrator
claude plugin marketplace update documentation-ai-migration
claude plugin update documentation-ai-migration@documentation-ai-migration
Or from inside Claude Code, without leaving the session:
/plugin marketplace update documentation-ai-migration
/plugin update documentation-ai-migration@documentation-ai-migration
Then start a new session, or reload the window in VS Code.
codex plugin marketplace upgrade documentation-ai-migration
codex plugin remove documentation-ai-migration@documentation-ai-migration
codex plugin add documentation-ai-migration@documentation-ai-migration
The first command fetches the latest version. Without it, reinstalling brings back the copy you already had.
Common questions
If the migrator does not start
- The migrate skill is not listed: Start a new session after installing or updating. Plugins load when a session starts.
- Your assistant reports that Node.js is too old: Install Node.js 22 or newer, then start a new session.
- In Codex, commands cannot reach a website or write to your migration folder: Start Codex with the network and folder options shown in How to install the migrator.
